The community that used to be here was actually called Munson WV. All maps name it Monson. It was built by United States Steel around the 1940s and I think it was named for John G. Munson, an Executive with USS. There were roughly 27 large, lovely single family homes for the families of men employed by USS in salaried positions at Gary #14 mine, which was a mile or so away. There was a building that had a few apartments as well as a boarding house to handle visiting workers, executives, inspectors, etc. There was also a one room schoolhouse just for the children of this community. It closed in the early 60s when enrollment dropped below the required minimum of 20 students. I was the last student to finish the 6th grade there. There was a company store near the mine. US Steel sold their Gary operations in the early 80s. Munson was demolished for surface mining a number of years before the mountaintop removal started.
In response to Emma’s post on Sept 11 about false prophets, I’m going to suggest joining the next on-line reading blog, IN THE NAME OF JESUS – Reflections on Christian Leadership. This book has been a blessing to me in helping me understand my alientation from the church. Comparing the Lessons we learn from Jesus and His temptation in the wildersness (the basis of the book) with many of today’s acclaimed leaders may be helpful in answering your question, Emma.
